Even More Mullet Season
Not much in shop news at the moment, so we’ll go right to the report.
The mullet run is still going strong, and the bluefish are still there chasing them. The surf is loaded with blues. They are not “Everywhere”, but when you find them, you find them pretty good. Fresh mullet (or even frozen mullet) on a mullet rig, small metals or small poppers are working. The fluke in surf are also cooperating for those still throwing bucktails and Gulp! or the Lucky Craft Pointer DD jerk baits.
The surf anglers throwing epoxy jigs are getting blues, Spanish mackerel and bonito.
The boats fishing the inshore reefs and wrecks are doing well on fluke and sea bass.
There are still some large fluke in the bay and that river north of us, and live spot are taking them.
Some recent catches:
Our cover photo: Daryl with a 20 inch, 3.2 pound fluke he caught on Gulp! off the jetty.
@s_hunter01 said “1 Striper at 23” and a bluefish blitz 20+ fish.”
Gary with a pair of Fluke up to 5.60lbs caught on his boat on the local reef
John Kravchek of @berkeleystriperclub with a 4.20 lb fluke caught in IBSP
Jack with a nice 4lb Fluke from the surf on Gulp!
@gregherbstman “All day with metals.”
Excellent mullet bite going into the afternoons & evenings lately, with a great artificial bite in the morning. Get some mullet and a mullet rig, and get the blues! Our very own @wefish138 left the kayak at home (well, on the truck) to soak some mullet for some blues. He had this one on before he even finished setting up.
There are bass on the beach. We don’t think these are migrating fish, but there are more and more bass starting to be caught on the beach. Early morning/sunrise and sunset/late night are your best bet. Small plastics, swimmers, or bucktails and you may get lucky with a striped friend. Here’s Joe with an early morning one.
While the mullet run is still going strong, we are going to lay off of Ray and his mullet haircuts for a moment to conduct a little bit of shop business. I would like to introduce you to the newest Grumpys Associate, David. Some of you that are observationally astute might recognize David already, as he is our original model for Grumpys clothing, specifically the Grumpys Embroidered sweatshirts. He was brought on board to essentially help keep the shop in tip-top shape, which means he basically follows Scott around and fixes what he screws up. Here he is from his most recent modelling shoot for Dublin Outfitters Clothing Company, who specializes in outerwear made with hand knit granny squares.
Ah, we shouldn’t break the streak, here is Ray in another mullet haircut….
