Last Weekend of Summer
First, shop news.
We received a shipment from Gomexus this week that we are pretty excited about. Besides the fine group of knobs and full handle assemblies, we received the Gomexus Plier X Titanium Fishing Pliers. These new pliers compare nicely to the more expensive titanium fishing pliers in all areas except one, the price. They also handle split rings and come with extra Tungsten Carbide cutters. If you are looking for a new set of pliers, these are definitely worth a look.
There is a new bait maker in town and we have their first soft plastic offering in stock, the Happy Baits Paddle Tail Grub. Similar to the kettle creek shads, but with a softer formula for more action, especially at the slower retrieve speed the big striped bass love. Speaking of big, these come in two sizes, 5 inch and 7 inch version that will make a nice big bass snack. Come check out what will become your new favorite soft plastic.
For the last weekend of Summer 2024, the name of the game in the surf right now is mullet. The NE wind and cooler temperatures at night really have them moving. And the predators have found them. Most of the predators chasing the mullet are bluefish, and anglers are now getting them on fresh mullet fished on a mullet rig, or just about any artificial lure anglers throw at them (metals, poppers, plastic swimmers, metal lipped swimmers, swim shads, etc)
There are also bass in the surf, though not as abundant as the bluefish. Anglers successfully catching stripers are seeing them in low light / no light conditions, with sunrise being the best time.
There are still a few fluke in the wash. This weekend is the last weekend of the fluke season (it ends the 25th), so if you want a few more filets for the freezer, hit the surf now with bucktails and Gulp! or Lucky Craft Pointer DD jerk baits.
Some recent notable catches:
Our cover photo: @spikeylee609 found some bass in the rough surf Tuesday morning, including this 36” specimen. Now, we all know the fish don't care what you are wearing while you fish, but with the water and air getting cooler, may we suggest a nice pair of waders instead of shorts over sweats?
Harry Meeker got a bunch of blues Wednesday night on an Alien swimmer.
For those who don’t know, Ray is a big fan of the Ghostbusters movie franchise. Don’t believe me? Just walk into the shop and shout “Who you gonna call?” and see what he does. Anyway, this weekend is the Baltimore Comic Con. Ray was going to go, but, with having taken more than 1/3 of the summer off, he surprisingly figured the optics didn’t look so good. He is a little disappointed, as he planned to do a Slimer cosplay.
Besides, Scott wanted to go to wear his Jabba The Hutt cosplay.
