Summer Winding Down...
First, shop news.
We have added a few new items to the shop. Got a low profile baitcast reel, like a Shimano TranX or a Penn Fathom Low Profile that you really like, but would prefer a little more cranking power. Grab a Gomexus Carbon Handle for Baitcasting Reels with Aluminum Knob. They fit most low profile baitcasters, plus a few round baitcasters (see the list in the link) so if you have a handle you are not happy about, you can make a change.
Love your Daiwa reel but don’t love the knob and handle. There is now an easy (and drill free) way to make a change. Gomexus Plug&Play Handles for the Daiwa BG and Daiwa BG MQ reels. Changing to a better handle is as simple as unscrewing the old one and screwing on the new one. You won’t need Frank to do it for you, but if you want t have some fun, go ahead and ask him anyway…
Looking for a new handle for a Penn or a Shimano? Stay tuned, we shall be adding them shortly.
How’s the fishing? I am glad you asked…
The surf is still about the same as it has been. Fluke on bucktails with Gulp!. Bluefish on mullet or small metals. We are hearing more and more of the speedsters showing up (false albacore, bonito and Spanish mackerel), who are taking epoxy jigs.
In the bay, the snapper blues are making a good showing and the spot are still thick in certain, uhhh, spots. The blowfish are still around too.
There are tons of bait staging itself in the back bay and local river. There are some blues and small striped bass feeding on this bait. Pretty soon it is going to move into the ocean to start its migration. We had this discussion recently in the shop and some of us think the full moon this week will push them out while others of us think that is too early and they will start on the new moon around the 15th of September. So what does that mean for you? Get ready, because it is either going to be 2 days or 2 weeks away.
Some recent notable catches:
Our cover shot is Grumpy’s favorite “homeless” angler, @jdial2.0 and his friend @jessepallocska with fluke between 19” and 22” off IBSP! They reported great action and were able to box up with the IBSP limit of 2 fish per person over 16”. Yes, this is August, and yes, he is wearing a winter hat…
Anthony Brattole with a 2.9 lb 21” fluke caught off Gulp! in the surf!
So Ray is on vacation this week picking pineapples. There is a lot of slack that needs to be picked up in the shop in his absence. Ok, maybe not that much slack. However, Ray does do stuff around the shop that someone needs to do. That stuff now falls to our very own Scott. He is starting to feel the pressure of being Ray. He’s doing an OK job of holding it together, but I think he is starting to crack…
