Happy Summer!
Happy Summer, as Tuesday was the summer solstice (ie first day of summer). Beyond that, there is no shop news (and there was much rejoicing).
The fishing remains very good in the area. The striped bass fishing remains great, but it is mostly a bait game at the moment. Clams and sand fleas (Sand crabs, mole crabs) are the two best baits right now. We have clams in stock and received some sand flea rakes this week, though they are selling quickly. For those who prefer lures, night time is the right time, and small bucktails, swimming plugs like the SP Minnow or Yo-Zuri Mag Darter, and soft plastics like the Kettle Creek Shads are all taking fish.
Bluefish have been around also. They have been taking cut bunker, mullet, or poppers.
The fluking off the beach is really picking up. One angler today reported 11 keepers from the sand, all released. Bucktails and Gulp! are working, as are sand fleas fished right at the edge of the shorebreak.
Off the local docks, the crabbing is really picking up. Frozen bunker is the bait of choice for those ornery critters.
Our lead off picture for the report is Hunter Evans with a 29 inch 8.8 pound bass that took on sand flea in the surf.
Tim with a nice bass on the Grumpy Clam. Don't let the cloudy days scare you away, they produce fish.
Our own Scott did some sweetwater fly fishing. Now you may be thinking “who is this imposter in the BLUE shirt fishing for unsalted fish?”, but I assure you, that is Capt BaitBurn himself, even if Scott is not wearing pink. And he is holding “the biggest sunfish” he has ever seen.
Ray had a rough week, so I wasn’t going to do anything to him today. Then I found a picture of a monkey taking a selfie that I couldn’t resist putting Ray’s face on. But, since it was a bad week, to be fair, I did it to everyone at Grumpys. This may or may not be a Brady Bunch reference...
