Finally, some warmth...
But first, shop news.
The old dudes are going to love this one. Take a look at the picture of the new Hogy OG Swimmer Plugs and see what that looks like? Did you get it? Yeah, it looks like an old school Rebel Windcheater, the model long discontinued from the 1970’s. Hogy has made some notable improvements. First, they added a weight transfer system similar to what is in an SP Minnow to facilitate longer casting. The lip is also a part of the plug mold, not a separate piece of plastic that was glued in, a weak point on the original. And finally, they are through-wired. You are going to want to check these out. We got a limited amount for in the shop and online.
For those looking for the Lucky Craft Pointed DD jerk baits, we received another shipment of them. We doubled the order this time, so hopefully they will last more than three days. Just in case, don’t wait long to order.
The water has warmed with the passing of TS Debby. It’s back to it’s seasonally normal temperatures. With that, the fishing has improved back to levels we expect it to be. The fluke fishing off the surf is good for anglers fishing the new jerkbaits. Don’t worry if you don’t have one, the tried and true bucktails and Gulp! has not stopped working.
There are still the occasion bluefish in the surf taking mullet or small chunks of bunker or mackerel. If you try for them, keep your eye on your rods. With the water warming up, we expect to start hearing more about large toothy critters in the surf, and those fish have no problem stealing a spiked rod.
The boats are doing well on fluke out on the local nearshore wrecks and reefs. The black sea bass are also cooperating out there.
The bay is still loaded with spot. Spot are a tasty panfish, or you can do what Liz did below and turn one into something bigger.
The snapper blues are making a good showing in the bay, and the crabbing on the local docks remains good.
Some recent notable catches:
Our cover shot: Colton with a 23” 4 lb fluke caught in the surf on a bucktail.
There are still striped bass around if you know where to look, and know what to present to them. Our new rod building apprentice, @lizzyribas, with a nice bass she caught live-lining spot.
The Grumpys crew was out fluke fishing again Sunday. Another boat limit with fish to 5 pounds. Here is our very own Sean with a nice one.
Sunday was Scott’s birthday. Most of the Grumpys crew forgot to wish him a happy birthday. So to make it up to him, we are asking everyone who stops in the shop this week to wish him a happy birthday. And while you are at it, since the years seem to be weighing on him, to help cheer him up remind him that no matter how large the number his age is, he will always be a millennial.
