Back Bay Bite Is On
But first, shop news...
We added a new locally sourced bucktail to the shop. Introducing Tinman Tackle Bullet Head Bucktails. If you have been around the northeast fishing shows in recent years you have likely seen Tinman’s stuff. These bucktails are made with a strong Mustad hook, have a forward line tie and most importantly are tied with a generous portion of real deer hair. They are the perfect bucktail for fishing off both sand and rocky beaches in the northeast.
This week we received a large order of Wally’s Lures. All of the models have been restocked, plus we added a new model. The Lil’ Wally swimmer, which is a 5 inch long metal lip for when the fish are focused on smaller bait. Made with the same quality as the bigger Wally’s Lures, but more petite for those small bait bites.
This weekend is the Shark River Surf Angler’s annual kids trout tournament, If you have a kid that likes to fish, this is a great event. A few of us here at Grumpys bring our offspring to the event. This year, we are hoping Scott will actually be able to catch a fish. They say third time is the charm…
The fishing in the bay has been great. No specific spots, as we are hearing about fish from all over. Blood worms are working well, as are small plastics such as Kettle Creek shads, Happy Baits Paddle Tail Grub, 3" NLBN Shads, small Tsunami holographic shads, small Storm Shads, small Vudu Shads, etc. The smallest size Rapala X-Rap is also taking it’s fair share of fish. And don’t forget to take a pack of Vudu shrimp with you. When the bass key In on grass shrimp, there is nothing better.
The winter flounder are starting to make a good showing. Blood worms on flounder rigs are the ticket for them. You can also use small pieces of clam. We have the clam chum and chum pots to help attract them to your spot too.
We have heard of some fish in that big bay much further north of the shop, mostly caught by kayak anglers. If you want to get in on that action, see the folks at Yakkity Yaks about getting fishing kayak set up.
We are planning to stock fresh clams in the shop next week, as we are hearing rumors of black drum just to the south of us. If they follow the same pattern as last year, they should be here any day. Get your drum rigs and get ready.
Here are some recent notable catches:
Our cover picture: @bobbybullock13 is on the fish locally on worms
@lulaj_michael with a nice Bass he caught off the docks on Vac-pack Bunker
The weather at one point was awful, but there were fish around during it. @tonysexotics found some.
@kurtiswalrath had a electric morning between the thunderstorms. Great bite locally here in the bay on bloodworms with some nice quality bass.
In case you haven’t seen before, our reel tech Frank is out for a few weeks on medical leave. While I can’t say much more than that, I can say he had his procedure this morning and is doing well. I won’t say what that procedure was, but you can all guess.
In all seriousness, Frank did have a procedure and it went well. He will be back at the reel bench after a few weeks rest.
