As The Water Slowly Warms
There will be no shop news for this report. We have some new hats coming, but they are not quite ready for their closeup Mr. DeMille.
The fishing is slowly improving. S-L-O-W-L-Y… This matches the rate that the water is warming up, which is also slow. But it is going in the right direction. Your best bet for fishing the surf is still to target fluke. They are biting, and the mornings lately have been the best time.
We have had a lot of customers come in asking for kingfish rigs, but we have not had any actual reports of kingfish. Read into that what you will.
In the bay the spot are so thick in certain areas they are being caught in crab traps. One of the best ways to catch them is with a sabiki rig, and adding small bits of squid or fish bites makes it more tempting to them.
Crabbing remains excellent. We have also had an uptick in participation with clamming.
Some notable catches:
Our cover shot: @ac_tr3 with a nice 22 incher caught off the surf Sunday morning.
You all might have heard Scott is in Florida. We have been enjoying the peace and stability in the shop. He went down a little earlier than the start of iCast to attempt to harass some Florida fish. Attempt is an operative word there. Good thing he brought help. You may think that help is David, they new guy at Grumpys. Nope. The ringer on this trip is our new rod building apprentice, Liz. Here she is with David showing them what a snook looks like.
Speaking of iCast, Bob is on his way down there as I type. If you need something custom from the rod department, you should wait until next week. Since this is the closest thing Bob takes to a vacation, and we are hoping he takes a day or two to himself after iCast. We expect this is what that would look like. Sorry Florida if this horrifies you.
