Memorial Day Fishing Report

First, shop news.

Our own Rockstar Jenni has increased her “Rockstardom” (is that a real word?) by giving an interview with On The Water Magazine.  You can see it here:

As far as the fishing currently goes, the holiday weekend was everything we hoped it could be.  The fishing off the surf for striped bass still remains good, and clams are still the hot bait.  We have plenty of salted in stock, and will have fresh shucked arriving on Tuesday.

In other surf-side news, the bluefish have shown up in the surf.  Poppers have been working well for them in the day, while SP Minnows have been working day and night.

Bluefish are not the only fish in the surf taking lures.  Apparently, a few bass have become bored with gorging on clams and have started taking artificial lures.  Poppers during first light are working.  Otherwise, try SP Minnows or swim shads (Tsunami, Storm or Vudu) in the dark.

We have even heard of a few fluke caught in the surf this past weekend.

In the back bay, bluefish are still roaming the bay and poppers are still the best way to find them.

Fluke are readily biting bucktails and Gulp!, and also squid strips on traditional fluke rigs.

Other news from the bay, the blowfish are in.  For those fishing with fluke, if your Gulp! came back looking like this picture, you encountered some blowfish.

Reports from the local docks say the crabbing is picking up using bunker for bait.

Offshore boats have been finding hungry and willing black sea bass out at the reefs and wrecks.  Salted clams have been the bait of choice for these fish.

@willy_jacobs22 with a 46” bass off the surf.

Dan Frascella 32" 13lbs on a popper from the surf.

Pat V is catching some bass on swim Shad’s off the jetty.

An angler that wanted to remain anonymous let us know they were getting blues in the surf.

Freddie Guacamaya with a 28” 5.5 lb blue taken on an SP Minnow.

Joe and Pete with fluke up to 3.35lbs down in IBSP on Gulp!

Good customer Colin caught a nice bass on an SP Minnow.

Pasha Stepaniouk with a nice 39 inch, 31.5 pound black drum caught on clams.

Here’s our very own Scott with a 40” bass on salted clams in IBSP Sunday night. He said he also had a few swirls on topwater but couldn’t hook up.  We are very disappointed in him and will be having him take remedial popper fishing classes.

Giving Ray a break for this report.  Jenni is trying to stay humble.  Think it is working?
